Reveal | Day 18- March 14 | Psalm 103
Mallory Nelson
Mashed potatoes with gravy. Fried chicken. Warm apple pie with a scoop
of vanilla ice cream. Comfort foods. Foods that bring memories, a sense of
normalcy, predictability, familiarity. Life can be like that sometimes. Things
are routine. We seem to be able to expect what’s around the corner. These
seasons of life typically bring us comfort, making it easy to lay our heads
down at night and thank God for the blessings in life.
But when things become unpredictable, what then? Life is known to throw us curveballs, with sharp left turns challenging our path. Whether a job change, an unexpected diagnosis, a broken relationship or a missed opportunity-- these hurdles in life can tempt us to question what good can come. Psalm 103:4-6 of today’s reading reminds us that it is God who “. . .redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desire with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.” What encouragement!
When God began loosening the roots nearly a year ago, preparing me for a huge move away from the only home I’d ever known, I immediately began worrying about what would be lost. The friendships that spanned decades; the comfort and familiarity of my church family. Plus, there was also loss of peace knowing our extended family was just ten minutes down the road. That’s when God quickly stepped in and reminded me, he is my ultimate provider. He had provided us with beautiful gifts in the form of people once before, and he would do it again. And, he has done it again.
Whether you’re currently enjoying your mashed potatoes and fried chicken or are finding yourself longing for the days of comfort and familiarity, remember who provides. Think back today on times you have needed God to show up, and he did; when things were uncertain and he brought you clarity. When you were anxious, he brought you rest. Fearful, and he brought you peace. He has shown up for you before, and he will again.
