Day 6 | 40 Days Through Mark

Day 6 | March 8 | Mark 3:20-35
By: Barth Smith

Jesus’ mother and brothers came wishing to meet with Jesus (v. 31). The multitude sitting around Jesus informed Him (v. 32). Jesus then posed a puzzling question to them: “Who are my mother and my brothers?” Then He looked around at the people and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God is my brother and my sister and mother” (vv. 34, 35).

Jesus is not putting down his mother and relatives. After all, who was more obedient in doing the will of God than Mary, the mother of Jesus? (Luke 1:38). Basically, Jesus is saying, “Be like my mother. Do the will of God as she does.” When we obey God we become sons and daughters of God. We then are able to call each other “brother” and “sister” in the Lord.

I grew up in a church where it was common to call Christians “brother” and “sister.” I didn’t have a clue as to why we did it. Now I know there is a bond between Christians that is often stronger than blood ties and bloodlines.

Spiritual relationships are often more valued than relative relationships. Our bonding and unity in Christ is what makes all the difference!
