Day 32 | April 7

Day 32 | April 7 | Mark 14:1-26
By: Aletha Hinthorn

A young musician who played her flute in the Messiah said that during performance, she recognized this was an opportunity she could show Jesus she loved Him. She prayed, “I’ll play my best, and if You can hear my flute in Heaven, this is for You, God.” Mark 14 tells of a lady who also longed to express her love to Jesus. She took her alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume that was worth nearly $50,000 in today’s terms. She would pour on Him the most precious thing she had.

Some watching considered this to be a total waste. “That perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor,” they scolded her harshly. Jesus defended her saying, “She has done a beautiful thing to me… She did what she could.”

The burning question Jesus is asking His bride today is “How much do you love me? Do you love Me enough to give Me a sacrificial love gift?” Nothing is more precious to Him than our expressions of love. Passionate love demands sacrifice. It is costly. A young pastor asked an older lady what he could do to love Jesus more. She said, “Get up an hour earlier to be with Him and sit in His presence worshiping Him.”

We might wonder, “Am I wasting time? Does Jesus really notice that I got up earlier for devotions today or that I worshiped on my way to work?” The answer is “Yes, He enjoys every moment we focus on Him.”

Carmen began taking her Bible to work so she could spend her lunch hour reading His Word. “I felt that Jesus was pleased with my desire to be with Him,” she later shared. So what are ways we can express our love to Jesus today? God seeks for those who offer silent gratitude, a prayer for others, or a whispered “I love You.” When our daily lives become opportunities to express our love to Jesus, at the end of the day, He will say, “She did a beautiful thing for me… She did what she could.”

Aletha, I was particularly drawn to the story of the flute player who wanted to give back her God-given talent as a way to express her love to Jesus. Reminds me to give daily of myself to Him as an expression of my love.
