Our History
Leading Every Generation
How We Started
Nearly 100 years ago, in 1930, a small group of devoted believers from various denominations had been consistently meeting for bible study in Olathe, KS, population 3,656. Wanting to know God better, they felt led to invite Rev. C.J. Garrett of Ottawa, Kansas, to hold revival services. Under the leadership of C. J. Garrett and the Kansas City District Superintendent, our church began with 18 charter members. It was officially recognized in September of 1931 with its first report to the KC District Assembly.
In its beginning, the Olathe Nazarene Church met in four different locations, including the new church construction at Lee and Wabash Streets in 1954.
In 1964, at the Nazarene General Assembly in Portland, Oregon, a decision was made to create a new liberal arts college located in middle America, now known as MidAmerica Nazarene University. Olathe was the chosen site, so our church made the decision to relocate to the eastside of town, allowing the church and college to be adjacent, and changing our name to College Church of the Nazarene.
Three worship centers, each with a cross-topped steeple rising heavenward, and other buildings highlight our church’s landscape today. Throughout these years and today, College Church’s Mission continues: Leading every generation into a growing relationship with Jesus so that all may experience God’s goodness and grace.
